Chapter Eleven

Tori snatched the rag draped over the fender of the truck. She quickly wiped the sweat from her brow before it could run into her eyes. A glance at the clock hanging on the shop wall showed her it was only 10:30 in the morning.

“Someone should have told me that August in southern Arizona is like living in the Sahara,” she said.

“You should have been here a couple of years ago. We didn't have this shop, and all our repairs were done outside.” Lance rolled out from under the big truck. “Talk about hot! Logan and I would come to work in the dark and set up lights. That was the only way we could get the mechanical repairs completed without frying.”

“Frying! That reminds me. Last week, when you sent me to Hereford with Lopez, he fixed us a hot lunch on the engine of the truck. Crazy.”

“Ah, yes. Manifold burritos?”

“Yes! Is that what you call them?”

“Yeah. Pretty yummy, too.”

“You've got that right.”

“Did you have burritos in San Diego?” asked Lance.

“Sure – bean burritos, beef burritos, combo burritos, breakfast burritos and even fish burritos.”

“Yuck. Fish burritos? Why ruin a great tortilla?” Lance made a face that caused Tori to laugh.

“Don't you like fish?”

“I'm a desert rat, remember. There's not a lot of fresh fish in this area, though I have done some fishing in the White Mountains and enjoyed eating what we caught. Even went to Colorado a couple times and fished for trout. Now, those babies were delicious.”

“Guess I've eaten just about every creature that swims in the ocean, and there's not many that I didn't like.”

“Even the raw stuff?”

Tori snugged down the bolt to the battery bracket. “I prefer cooked...but I can do raw if it's fresh and has a spicy sauce.”

“Gag. You're a better man than I.” Lance made a face and shivered dramatically.

“Try it...you'll like it. After all, who in their right mind would eat something called a manifold burrito? And they're amazing. I think the name is perfect, too. I thought Lopez had slipped a cog when he popped the hood of the truck and laid foil-wrapped burritos on the manifold. But thirty minutes later, when he retrieved them, they were not only spicy hot but piping hot. It was like they'd been baked in an oven.”

“One of the perks of the heat you were complaining about earlier.”

“True. It got pretty hot in San Diego, but I guess the ocean breezes made it feel cooler.”

“Bet you didn't have to do your own mechanical repairs at your last job, did you?” Lance grabbed a wrench and scooted back under the engine.

“No. But I don't mind.”

“Hah!”

“Really. This is all new and rather interesting to me,” insisted Tori as she pulled another spark plug.

“Careful or you'll mess up your manicure.” Lance's teasing voice drifted up through the open hood.

“Right. And we all know how important my inch-long, fire-engine-red, acrylic nails are to me.” Tori eyed her short, unpolished nails, now filled with grease, and grimaced.

“You've got nice hands, Tori.
